Russian River

I was back up at the Squaw Rock area this morning trying to locate some trout. Many years back I could hook eight to 10 inch trout on a regular basis in this area. Now, nothing. Is it my lack of skill or are the fish just not there? The DFG used to stock this section with trout but I doubt they are doing that anymore.

Anyway, it's a fun section to cast and drift flies with no crowds.

Russian River

Actual Date: May 16, 2009
Tubers Interuptus
I headed back up to "Hidden Bar" on the Russian River north of town knowing there had to be trout in this fine section of the river.

I started off by just drifting a single salmon egg through a few runs but got nothing. I then tried drifting a few different fly patterns through the same drifts, still nothing.

Then the tubers started coming through. Without going into detail, I knew it was a waste of time at this point. I had a beer on Hidden Bar enjoying the hot sun and watching the tuber fiasco, then headed out.

Nice run, but no fish..... yet. I guess my next try will be at the evening hours drifting nymphs.

Some interesting rocks in this section. A nice place to sunbath

Lake Sonoma

Raining again today, but I wanted to get out for a walk, so I grabbed a fly rod and headed out to Lake Sonoma. I hiked down to Little Warm Springs Creek from the Skaggs Springs Vista trail head and spent a little while casting in the cove.

Not much action and pretty quiet with the rain. I got one bass to come up to a streamer but he didn't take it.

Russian River

I took a short ride up to the section of the Russian River north of Cloverdale yesterday. It was raining pretty good but I had the urge to throw a fly line. I've caught trout in this section in the past, but the feeling wasn't right so I really wasn't expecting any hook ups. I was right!

Still, it's a fun spot to fish so I'll try again another time.

A few of the riffles.
